"Moved to Texas in 1866. Served in Company 'A'. Regiment commandedby Col. Pete Turner of Tennessee. Went to Virginia and was inJackson's Army, infantry. Was captured and stayed in Fort DelawarePrison for 22 months and 2 days. Was furloughed about 3mos before wasclosed and war ended before I got back into service" -- from Pensionapplication. Served in same co. as brother D.W. Phipps. (AJ was aprivate).
A.J. was captured 3 Jul 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg. Accordingto "Tennesseans in the Civil War" page 171: On July 3, the brigadecommander, the regimental commader, a large number of other officersand enlisted men, and the colors of the 1st and 14th Regiments, werecaputerd by the 14th Connecticut Infantry.
The pension application also states: he was exchanged 27 Feb 1865 atFort Delaware, and was again captured at Petersburg on April 4, 1865,being released at Fort Delaware on 18 May 1865.
