"The 1850 census of Lauderdale Co., Mississippi, shows that Levi,
Margaret and Martha Coker, children of Peyton and Cynthia Coker, were
born in Alabama. Beginning with Darling Coker in 1837, the rest of the
children were born in Mississippi. The census also shows that Margaret
Jones Coker, the mother of Peyton, was a member of the household of
Matilda Coker Watts and Thomas Watts. She evidently came to
Mississippi a widow.
The Coker's Chapel Methodist church in Vimville, Mississippi, near
Meridian, was organized about 1840 in the Pleasant Grove church
located some four miles from the present site. It was composed of both
white and colored. The first buildling in the present site was
constructed in 1868 on land donated by Peyton Coker. Members at this
time were: Peyton Coker, Cynthia Coker, Darling Coker, Thomas Coker,
Jones Coker, Daniel McInnis, Lucy Coker McInnis and Mary Coker
Haggard. The original church building was of logs, which were split by
two negroes, Mose and Ike Pringle. In 1882 the log buildings were
replaced by a two-story frame one . In both of these buildings there
was not only preaching, but 'Farmers Alliance' meetings, as well as
the community school. A new building was constructed in 1918 during
the pastorate of the Rev. H.C. Castle and another, the present one in
1965.
The land for Coker's Chapel Cemetery was donated by Peyton Coker:
the first to be buried there were his daughter Laura Emaline in 1851,
and his mother, Margaret Jones Coker on October 8, 1851 and also a
body servant of Margaret's.
The death of Lucy Coker McInnis in February 1940 marked the passing
of the last one of the early members of the church.
